Transforming the herp industry starts with collaboration! This is exactly why the Healthy Trade Institute (HTI) works alongside the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine (UTCVM) every day.

What Role is UTCVM Playing in the HTI Adoption Program?

HTI was founded by renowned scientists, many of whom work closely with UTCVM. This partnership has remained a fundamental building block as we’ve continued to expand the Adoption Program and its offerings.

Every member of the veterinary team at UTCVM is board-certified by the American College of Zoological Medicine. Plus, UTCVM is home to the only four ACZM Diplomates currently practicing in Tennessee or the neighboring states. And these vets are just as passionate as they are qualified! Everyone involved in this partnership dedicates countless additional hours to caring for a wide range of reptile and amphibian species.

In addition to receiving the highest-quality care, HTI’s animals provide clinical students at UTCVM with hands-on training and real-world case experience. Every surrendered animal contributes to the education of veterinarians who will shape animal medicine for decades to come.

Let’s Take a Closer Look at This Partnership

HTI’s Surrender Program was created to support reptile and amphibian owners when they are no longer able to provide proper care for their pets. We understand that circumstances change, and that herps aren’t the right fit for every household.

Our program is completely no-fault and judgment-free. We simply want to offer a safe, humane option for when an owner’s situation or ability to care for their pet has changed.

Here’s what the journey looks like for every reptile and amphibian that we care for:

  1. Safe Surrender. Animals are delivered to HTI using an overnight carrier service in partnership with Redline Shipping to ensure safe and humane transport.
  1. Pathogen Screening. Upon arrival, each animal is screened by the HTI team for key pathogens, helping us identify any health issues right away. Plus, our molecular diagnostics reveal critical health data beyond the reach of conventional testing.
  1. Veterinary Evaluation. Animals are then placed in the care of the UTCVM veterinary team. They then receive a thorough health evaluation using advanced diagnostics and specialty care, including endoscopy, LigaSure surgical technology, and advanced imaging.
  1. Treatment if Needed. If any underlying conditions are identified, the UTCVM veterinarians provide the appropriate treatments or procedures to support recovery and a long, happy life.

Our Collaboration’s Impact on Herpetological Health

HTI is leading the field in molecular diagnostics and the surveillance of emerging infectious diseases of amphibians and reptiles. At the same time, the veterinarians at UTCVM are providing the highest quality of clinical care to every pet that comes their way.

So, what does this mean for the future of reptiles and amphibians? We’re creating…

  • More reliable disease detection
  • Regulated husbandry practices
  • Stronger conservation initiatives
  • Science-backed standards of care
  • Improved disease monitoring protocols

Essentially, this partnership checks every box. (And then some!)

Join Us in Advancing Reptile & Amphibian Care

Our adoption program is helping reshape the herp trade, but meaningful change requires sustained support. By donating to HTI, you can directly contribute to our higher standards of exotic pet care.

Every gift funds the expenses of essential medical care, diagnostic testing, specialized housing, and ongoing maintenance for the unique species in our care. Thank you for your support and for following along on the future advancements of our partnership with the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine!
