On the hunt for a scaly or squishy companion? Our Herp Adoption Program is your ticket to welcoming a unique reptile or amphibian into your home. (Or surrendering your beloved pet into safe, nurturing, and caring hands!)
Heard about the program but aren’t sure what it’s all about? No worries. We’re breaking down everything you need to know about our Herp adoption program in today’s blog. Keep scrolling to learn how this incredible initiative can help you.
So, what exactly is HTI’s Herp Adoption Program?
Excellent question, friends! We explain it like this: instead of buying from a breeder or pet store, our adoption program makes it easy to give a deserving reptile or amphibian a new, loving home.
Our nationwide program launches in May of 2025 with a goal of rehoming herpetofauna (that’s the fancy term for reptiles and amphibians) to both businesses and individuals. But of course, it’s not just about getting a new pet; it’s about supporting responsible pet ownership and offering animals in need a second chance.
Why consider adopting a herp?
Sure, we might be a tad biased. But we think there are some pretty solid reasons why this program is worth checking out:
- Giving a Second Chance. Many reptiles and amphibians end up in shelters or rescues for various reasons. However our adoption program ensures they end up in a safe and caring environment.
- Unique Companions. Every herp owner knows that they’re fascinating and low-maintenance pets.

- Certified Health: The health of all surrendered animals is verified by University of Tennessee veterinarians before they’re released for adoption.
- Cost Savings. While there will be an adoption fee, it will be similar or less than purchasing from a breeder or store. Plus, there’s no fee to surrender your pet!
- Supporting Ethical Practices. By adopting, you’re supporting a program that prioritizes animal health and responsible rehoming – discouraging impulse buys and malintentioned-pet-trade.
- Learning and Discovery. You might encounter species or morphs you’ve never considered before, – which is pretty dang cool!
What kind of herps can you expect?
For the initial launch in May 2025, we’re focusing on rehoming specific types of herps. Expect to find:
- Pet Amphibian Species. Including a wide range of frogs, toads, and salamanders.
- Bearded Dragons. We’re currently accepting these popular and relatively docile lizards for surrender.
- Ball Pythons. These generally submissive and manageable snakes will also be part of the 2025 adoption program.
It’s important to note what the HTI cannot accept at this time:
- Species Native to the United States. To protect native wildlife, the program will not be rehoming any amphibians or reptiles indigenous to the US.
- Injurious Species. Any species listed as injurious in the United States will not be accepted to prevent potentially harming the environment.
- Prohibited Species in Tennessee. We must adhere to local regulations, and any species prohibited in Tennessee will not be part of the program.
- CITES-Listed Species. Any amphibian or reptile species listed under CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) will not be accepted – reflecting our commitment to conservation efforts.
Keep in mind that we have plans to expand the program in 2026 to include other reptile species. So, if you’re interested in a different type of reptile, stay tuned for future announcements or drop us an email to let us know what you’d like to see included!
