HTI Nationwide Herp Adoption Program

The HTI Nationwide Herp Adoption Program is operated in collaboration with the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine (UTCVM). Prior to adoption approval, all animals are tested for select pathogens and receive a health check by UTCVM veterinarians.  On average, HTI Certified Pets receive >$200 in veterinary care prior to adoption!

What are the steps for adoption?

1) Fill out the HTI adoption application form.

2) If you are approved for HTI adoptions (usually processed in 1-2 weeks), you can inquire about adoption for specific animals listed in our Husbandry.Pro Storefront. Click “Inquire about this Animal” to express purchase interest.  Adoption of more than one animal is allowed.

3) When inquiring about animals available for adoption, the HTI will consider your level of experience and the amount required for a particular animal. Some of our adoptions require more experience and resources for care than others (see below).

4) If approved for an adoption, payment can proceed. Accepted forms of payment are Square and PayPal.

NOTE: All prices listed do not include shipping and handling. Adoptions will be shipped priority overnight on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday when weather conditions are favorable. Onsite pickup (Knoxville, TN) is free.

HTI Experience Classifications

  • Novice– this is your first amphibian or reptile, or less than one year of experience with care
  • Intermediate- at least 1.5 years of experience with 1-2 species of amphibians or reptiles
  • Expert- over 5 years of experience with over 3 species of amphibians or reptiles
  • Diamond- demonstrated ability to care for animals with special health needs
